“ After a long tiring day of train travel and equally tiring walking, we wanted something simple and good, a nice piece of cod perhaps. We found Hoole Fish Bar just down Ermine Street, its presence noted by a very funny fish above the door. Owned by a Chinese couple who’ve toiled here for over 20 years to make a better life for themselves, they were very kind and helpful to us when we ordered. (My wife, originally from British Hong Kong, spoke to the lady as best she could, but they couldn’t understand each other’s dialects…didn’t matter…) It is a counter service take away, it was cold and raining, so we asked if we could stand in a corner and eat. The lady said of course ( although it was a strange request!). She spoke to her husband, and they very graciously invited us into their home to enjoy our well prepared and very generous food in the warmth of their kitchen! We thanked them many times and parted with smiles, handshakes, and traditional bows! The World is really a very small place after all… ”
